Ever thought about renting a herd of sheep to mow your grass? It may be more common than you think, because Pennsylvania is the sixth best state for animal lawn mowing, according to a study by Lawn Love.
Goats and sheep are the most popular animal lawnmowers, and they used to be commonly used before gas-engine mowers became popular. While some people decide to adopt their own livestock mowers, others choose to rent them from emerging animal mowing companies.
Animal lawn mowing, sometimes playfully dubbed “lamb mowing,” can be a beneficial and eco-friendly alternative to traditional gas-powered lawn mowers, reducing CO2 emissions significantly. According to Lawn Love, “An EPA report found that the nation’s use of gas-powered lawn equipment is proportionate to the smog-forming pollution emitted by 30 million cars.”
In addition to being eco-friendly, grass grazers reduce labor, provide natural fertilizer and promote mental health and well-being (because who wouldn’t enjoy sitting back and watching a herd of fluffy sheep munch on their yard?).
Of course, there are drawbacks to this mowing method. Animals can’t make lawns look as pristine as traditional mowers can, they take longer to get the job done and animal mowing isn’t an accessible or realistic option for everyone.
Whether lamb mowers are right for you depends on a variety of factors, but Lawn Love gathered data on all 50 states to find out where animal lawn mowing is most in demand and most accessible. To do so, they looked at average yard acreage, average monthly Google searches for related key words and number of animal lawn mowing companies in each state, then gave overall scores out of 100.
The top six states for animal lawn mowing are:
- California (71.40)
- Wisconsin (62.19)
- Minnesota (60.67)
- Iowa (41.04)
- Georgia (41.00)
- Pennsylvania (36.49)
Notably, Pennsylvania ranked sixth for demand and seventh for access.
Given the generally low accessibility of animal lawnmowers nationwide, they’re likely not a viable option for most people at the moment. However, these helpful grazers could be the future of lawn mowing, especially in Pennsylvania where there are many rural areas, farms and grass-loving animals.
